How to Learn Cebuano Online Free — Every Tool That Actually Works
The honest truth about learning Cebuano online
Most "learn Cebuano" resources are wrong, incomplete, or built for Tagalog learners and badly adapted. This guide lists what actually works — free tools, free audio, and a realistic sequence that native Cebuano speakers have verified.
Cebuano (also called Bisaya) is the second most spoken language in the Philippines, with 22+ million native speakers across Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Davao, and Mindanao. Learning it online is entirely possible — here is how.
Free tools that actually work
TalkBisaya.com (this site)
The most complete free Cebuano reference in English. Use it for:
- Dictionary — 775+ Cebuano entries with pronunciation and example sentences
- Phrases — Categorized everyday phrases with pronunciation guides

Anki (free flashcard app)
Search the Anki shared deck database for "Cebuano" or "Bisaya." The best decks include audio recorded by native speakers. Anki's spaced repetition is the fastest way to cement vocabulary — 15 minutes a day beats 90 minutes once a week.
Language exchange apps
Tandem and HelloTalk connect you with Cebu-based native speakers who want to practice English. Speak Cebuano for 15 minutes, then switch. In Cebu City and Metro Davao, thousands of people actively use these apps. Most are patient with beginners.
The 60-day sequence
Days 1–7 — Pronunciation and 50 core words
Cebuano has no difficult sounds for English speakers. Learn the 5 pure vowels (a, e, i, o, u), the ng sound, and the glottal stop. Then: 50 high-frequency words from TalkBisaya's vocabulary lists.
Days 8–21 — Essential phrases
100 phrases covering greetings, survival phrases, shopping, transport, and reactions. Don't memorize full conversations yet — memorize building blocks. Kumusta (how are you), salamat (thank you), palihug (please), dili (no), oo (yes).
Days 22–35 — Grammar fundamentals
Cebuano's biggest learning curve: the verb focus system. Mo-/Mag- marks actor focus (who acts). Gi- marks object focus (what is acted on). Start with present tense, then past. Don't try to master all aspects at once.
Days 36–60 — 300 words and conversation practice
Use TalkBisaya's thematic word lists — food, family, travel, numbers, time. Find a language exchange partner. Your goal: 5 minutes of real Cebuano conversation per session. Every mistake you survive is one you will not make again.
Common mistakes to avoid
Studying Tagalog resources by accident. Tagalog and Cebuano are separate languages. A "learn Filipino" course will not teach you Cebuano. Make sure your resource specifically says Cebuano or Bisaya.
Skipping spoken practice. Cebuano is primarily a spoken language. Spoken first, written later.
Trying to learn all Visayan languages at once. Cebuano, Waray, and Hiligaynon are different. Learn Cebuano first — the others come easier once you have the foundation.
